Honours Abound For CASS Academic Staff

Academic staff from across the College of Arts & Social Sciences have received a range of awards from the ANU Vice-Chancellor’s Community and External Liaison Awards reflecting the excellence, diversity and impact of the current research and teaching that exists within the College.

Congratulations to all the winners and recipients of each of these outstanding awards and honours.

2009 ANU Vice-Chancellor's Community and External Liaison Awards

The College of Arts & Social Sciences academic staff featured strongly in the annual ANU Community and External Liaison Awards which recognise the impact ANU research and researchers play in contributing and shaping national discussions.

Professor Ian McAllister (Research School of Social Sciences) won the “

, right time” category for his ANU Poll / Defence White Paper.  Professor McAllister also finished fourth in the “Best Results from a Media Release” category for his research into ‘ANU Poll zeroes in on public views on defence’.

The Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies and its Director, Professor Amin Saikal, won the “Biggest public lecture” category for the ‘Dialogue, Justice and Peace’ lecture by His Excellency Dr Sayed Mohammad Khatami.  This public lecture hosted over 1,100 attendees in the Llewelyn Hall and was screen on several public television channels including Foxtel’s Asia-Pacific channel.

Dr Shakira Hussein (School of Social Sciences) along with Professor Hilary Charlesworth (CAP) won the “Biggest leverage and engagement through a public event” category for the lecture and discussion on ‘Ban the Burka’.

The ANU School of Music through Mr Alan Vivian won the “Best use of new media and technology" for the Streaming Sounds concert series.  In addition, Dr Susan West won the "Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Community Outreach" for her role as Convenor of the innovative Music Education Program.

Professor Andrew Leigh (Economics Program, Research School of Social Sciences) was the fourth "Most prolific ANU staff member quoted in the domestic media".  Professor Leigh was also third in the “Best results from a media release” category for his research into ‘Minorities find it harder to get jobs’.

Dr Linda Botterill (Director, National Institute for Rural and Regional Australia) placed fourth place in the Vice-Chancellor’s Award category.
